Margaret of Austria (1480-1530) was a prominent political figure in the early 16th century, and ruled for some time Habsburg Netherlands from Mechelen. The statue is next to the 13th century Saint Rumbold's Cathedral and its famous St. Rumbold's Tower, an important tourist destination in the city whose location you can see down on the map.
