The castle was built in the 11th century, although the first fortifications on the hill date back to the 1st century BC! This significant national monument has eleven towers, an archaeological site, a museum and gardens featuring native forest species of mainland Portugal. The castle is an important tourist attraction – set on the highest hill in the city - offering not only history but also excellent views over Lisbon and the River Tagus!
