Minsk is Belarus's capital and largest city, with a population of about 2 million in the city and 2.3 million in the metropolitan area. It is one of Europe's oldest cities, and it suffered greatly during the Great Patriotic War (22 June 1941–9 May 1945). Minsk has been rebuilt and is now a beautiful, modern city that honours its historic past.
Among the city's landmarks are the Victory Monument in Victory Square, the Town Hall in Svobody Square, the National Academic Bolshoi Opera and Ballet Theatre of the Republic of Belarus, the iconic Minsk Gates, and magnificent churches such as the Church of Saints Simon and Helena.
