Canary Islands

The archipelago of the Canary Islands (Las Islas Canarias), also known as the Canaries (Las Canarias), is an autonomous community of Spain on the Atlantic Ocean, west of Africa. The main islands of Tenerife, Fuerteventura, Gran Canaria, Lanzarote, La Palma, La Gomera, and El Hierro are among the most famous tourist destinations. In Tenerife we find the world city of Santa Cruz de Tenerife and the capital of the Canary Islands, together with Las Palmas in Gran Canaria. These two are the most populated islands in the group, and all together the Canaries have over 2 million inhabitants. The Canaries are hilly and home to thirteen national parks, with the Mount Teide, being one of the highest volcanoes in the world, and the most visited in Spain. The main attractions in the Canaries are the sandy beaches and the subtropical climate, water activities such as diving, snorkelling and kayaking. Points of interest include the Colonial City San Cristobal de la Laguna (Tenerife), the Canary Gardens (Gran Canaria), the religious heritage of Betancuria (Fuerteventura), the resort town of Puerto del Carmen (Lanzarote), the historic area of Calle O'Daly (La Palma), Playa de Santiago (Gomera) and Mirador de la Pena (El Hierro).
