The country of Cape Verde (Cabo Verde) is an archipelago of volcanic formation composed of 10 inhabited islands, and a few others uninhabited, extending in Central Atlantic Ocean, off the west coast of Africa.
Cape Verde has influences of the Portuguese colonisation, which includes the spoken language, although it has a unique culture, shown on the country’s artistic production such as in the music and their general lifestyle.
The islands are divided into two groups according to their locations. The Barlavento Islands are in the northern group, consisting of the islands of Sal, Boa Vista, Santo Antão, São Vicente, Santa Luzia, and São Nicolau; the Sotavento Islands are Brava, Fogo, Maio and Santiago.
The capital of Cape Verde, Praia, is situated in Santiago, the largest island.
The landscapes are mainly rocky with wonderful white or black sand beaches, so it may be a good choice for holidaymakers looking for sunshine and outdoor activities. In the island of Santo Antão there are great hiking trails while others such as Sal and Boa Vista are more popular for water sports. In the island of Fogo there is still an active volcano and admired panoramic views.
The archipelago of Cape Verde is one of the four composing the Macaronesia ecoregion, where distinctive biogeography is found.
