The Altagracia Province is situated on the east part of the Dominican Republic, and has the city of Salvaleón de Higüey, or simply Higüey, on the Yuma River, as its capital. An important site in this city is the Shrine of Our Lady of Altagracia, patroness of the nation. A significant touristic area in this province is Punta Cana, along the Atlantic Ocean and the Caribbean Sea. The long sandy beaches are irresistible and the marine life is rich, inviting the visitors for scuba diving, snorkelling and boat trips. A visit to the East National Park, including to the stunning Saona Island, is highly recommended!
