South Sinai Governorate (محافظة جنوب سيناء‎) is an administrative division in the east part of Egypt, consisting of the southern part of the Sinai Peninsula.
In this region stands the Mount Sinai, the probable location of the biblical Mount Sinai, a holy site for being the place where Moses received the Ten Commandments. Important landmarks in the region of South Sinai include the “Sacred Monastery of the God-Trodden Mount Sinai”, one of oldest still functioning Christian monasteries in the world, also having the oldest continually working library.
The Red Sea Riviera, in the eastern side of the South Sinai Peninsula is a holiday destination with resort towns such as Sharm el-Sheikh around Naama Bay outstanding beaches. The Raithu desert surrounds the capital city, El Tor, which is situated 265 kilometres from the Suez Gulf. El Tor is an ancient city with significant landmarks such as the Raithu monastery, recommended as a UNESCO World Heritage site.
