This national monument is a magnificent triumphal arch built to commemorate Napoleon's victories and to honour those who fought for France during the French Revolutionary and Napoleonic Wars. The names of France's victories and generals can be seen on the monument's surfaces.
The Arc de Triomphe was completed in 1836 and stands 50 metres(164 ft) tall, 45 metres (148 ft) wide, and 22 metres (72 ft) deep. It is located in the heart of Place Charles de Gaulle, a massive road junction where twelve avenues intersect, as shown on the map further down the page.
