As shown on our map further down the page, Berlin's Brandenburg Gate is located in the square Pariser Platz, an 18th-century structure built on the site of a former city gate. It was the magnificent entrance to the palace of the Prussian monarchs via the boulevard Unter den Linden.
The most visited monument has twelve 15-meter-high Doric columns, six on each side. The top Quadriga sculpture, which was first installed in 1793, represents a four-horse chariot driven by the goddess of victory, Victoria.
The Brandenburg Gate has been at the centre of many political events in German history, including being a symbol of Berlin's Cold War division and a site of manifestations and triumphs.
