The Free and Hanseatic City (Freie und Hansestadt) of Hamburg is a city-state, in northern Germany. This cosmopolitan city has the major port in the country, which is also the city's most significant characteristic. It is situated on the Elbe River, and connected to the North Sea. At the core of Hamburg there are the Inner and Outer lakes, and hundreds of canals cross the city, many navigable at the profit of pleasure boats. The old town (Altstadt) and the new town (Neustadt) are connected by the Jungfernstieg Boulevard. Iconic buildings include the St. Michael’s Church.
