The administrative region of Attica (Περιφέρεια Αττικής) is located in southern Greece, with the city of Athens at its heart. Most of this region is in the Attica Peninsula on the Aegean Sea, it also comprises a part of the Peloponnese Peninsula, and a few islands including Aegina, Poros and Kythira. Athens, the capital and largest city of Greece is known for its ancient civilization and for the first notion of democracy hence ancient landmarks in this city are significant as well as in other places of the region. Athens also shows a rich contemporary culture and a laid back ambience such as in the neighbourhoods of Plaka, Kolonaki and Monastiraki. The seaside is dotted with fine resorts including Paleo Faliro and the town of Piraeus, whose harbour is essential for connections between the Aegean Islands, for cruise ships, and few regular international destinations.
