In the foreground, you see an access to Palombaro Lungo, an historic site and tourist attraction in Matera - an enormous water system below the main square of the city. The webcam also displays the large fountain (Fontana Ferdinandea) on the square as well as a glimpse of the imposing building of the municipal-owned cinema (cinema communale).
Matera's historic districts are known as "Sassi di Matera", which are UNESCO World Heritage Sites. These two districts are unique for their ancient cave dwellings and houses dug out of the rocks.
