The archipelago of Japan (日本) is located east of China, Korea and Russia, in the Pacific Ocean, and comprises 6,852 islands. Honshu (where Tokyo and Hiroshima are located), Hokkaido (a popular ski destination), Kyushu (with subtropical beaches) and Shikoku are the four largest islands, occupying 97% of the country's territory.

It is a nation known for its modern, populated cities, its cuisine (sushi), natural beauty, hot springs (in Gunma), imperial monuments and thousands of temples. Shintoism, the native religion of Japan, based on the worship of nature and the ancestors, as well as Buddhism are the main religions, while Christianity is a minority.

With a total population of approximately 126 million inhabitants, Japan is one of the world’s most densely populated countries.
