Hiroshima Prefecture is situated on the island of Honshu, the largest island in Japan, with a coastline on the Seto Inland Sea to the south. The region shares borders with Shimane Prefecture to the north, Yamaguchi Prefecture to the southwest, Tottori Prefecture to the northeast, and Okayama Prefecture to the east.
The region's capital, Hiroshima, is globally known for being the first city destroyed by an atomic bomb, in World War II. Nowadays, the city is home to around 1,1 million people, making it the largest city in western Honshu. A must-see landmark in the city is the Hiroshima Peace Memorial, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, a memorial to the people killed in 1945, and where you will see the only structure prior to the bombing left standing in the city. You can also go to Hiroshima Castle, which is a copy of the old castle, and the rebuilt Shukkeien Garden, which is a unique garden with miniature landscapes.

In fact, one of the most sought-after destinations in Hiroshima Prefecture, in Japan, is the island of Itsukushima, also called Miyajima, where stands Itsukushima Shrine, a Shinto shrine complex famous for its huge torii gate, which seems to be floating in the water.

Another popular destination is the port city of Onomichi, famous for its Temple Walk, featuring numerous walks that link 25 temples, and Mount Senkōji accessible by a cable car.

In Kure, a port and shipbuilding city, you will like to see the Kure Maritime Museum, known as the Yamato Museum, and taste the local sake.
