Shimane Prefecture (島根県) is situated in the south west part of Honshu - Japan's main island. This is a coastal region on the Sea of Japan to its north, bordering Hiroshima Prefecture to the south, Tottori Prefecture to the east and Yamaguchi Prefecture to the southwest.
The capital, Matsue, is known as the " Water City" - it is the beautifully located by two sea water lakes - Shinji and Nakaumi - the River Ohashi River and the sea. The most famous landmark in the city is the Matsue Castle, one of the few existing original Japanese castles.
In the city of Yasugi, the Adachi Museum of Art is worth a visit, featuring Japanese art and renowned gardens. There are other museums and landmarks in this city, as well as the tranquil Saginoyu Onsen (hot spring). Izumo is famous for its temples including the most significant Shinto shrines in Japan - Izumo-taisha. In Izumo visitors also enjoy the scenic Tachikue Gorge, famed not only for its beauty, but also for the thousands of Buddhist statues that are found there! Other tourist destinations in Shimane are the Oki Islands with dramatic coastlines and natural areas.
