The state of Baja California, or the Free and Sovereign State of Baja California (Estado Libre y Soberano de Baja California), is located in western Mexico, in the northern part of Baja California Peninsula which lies between the Pacific Ocean and the Gulf of California. 

It borders on the Mexican states of Sonora (east), Baja California Sur (south), and the U.S. states of Arizona (east) and of California (north). Baja California is famed for its delightful sandy beaches and abundant and diverse marine life including blue whales and great white sharks. Mexicali is the state capital, a lively city of cultural diversity, with excellent museums, landmarks, and a major attraction to its visitors - stands offering the best tacos. Baja California is gifted with superb natural landscapes and biodiversity. Travel destinations include the Valley of the Cirios, Guadalupe Canyon, a hot springs oasis, and the Bay of Loreto National Park, a unique marine park.
