Railway turntables were important during the steam locomotive era, when locomotives were far more powerful in the forward direction and had to be turned to make a return trip. These facilities were frequently more practical to build than the wye junction, which took up more space.
Nowadays, turntables are rarely used for regular passenger transportation. This facility in Wolsztyn is Europe's last turntable that locomotives still use on a regular basis. The annual Steam Locomotive Parade, held on the first Saturday of May, attracts thousands of visitors to Wolsztyn.
