The distinctive sandy beach of Praia da Calheta was the first artificial beach in Madeira, with sand imported from Morocco. The two beaches are sheltered by breakwaters and can get crowed during the summer. In the village you may visit the old Sugar Cane Museum (Engenho da Calheta) where you will learn about the sugar cane culture, which was important to Madeira's economical life.
