The Republic and Canton of Geneva (République et Canton de Genève) is situated in western Switzerland, surrounded almost completely by France and bordering Lake Geneva. This French-speaking administrative region has Geneva as its capital and the centre of this cosmopolitan canton, where about 40% of its inhabitants are foreigners. Geneva is a city of international importance, as it is home to major corporations’ headquarters and to the European head office of the United Nations in Palais des Nations. Although it is widely known as a financial centre with numerous Swiss banks in the city, Geneva is also a major tourist attraction for its history and monuments, and for the sightseeing over Lake Geneva, with the jet of water, Jet d’Eau, being a famous landmark of the metropolis.
