The U.S. state of Maine is situated in the northeastern side of the country with an extensive and variable Atlantic Ocean shoreline. This is the least populated state on the east side of the Mississippi River, with over 80% of its land being forested. With approximately 400 km of coastline with inlets, bays and thousands of offshore islands, the largest being Mount Desert Island with the significant Acadia National Park. The attractiveness of coastal Maine is so great that many seafronts were almost completely transformed into tourist resorts for ocean related activities, especially in the area of Boothbay Harbor town. This state has a water culture in general, as the inland side has plenty of lakes and streams. For mountain-lovers there is plenty of area to choose from, as for example on the Appalachian Mountain Range, in western Maine, where hiking and camping are very popular.
