Virginia, officially designated as the Commonwealth of Virginia, is an eastern state of the U.S. with an Atlantic coastline. Virginia also has a seafront to Chesapeake Bay, which separates two of its counties in Delmarva Peninsula, yet the Chesapeake Bay Bridge-Tunnel connects them to the contiguous part of the state (to the city of Virginia Beach). This flat coastal part of the state is named the Tidewater Region, and includes the estuaries in the area. Forests and 30 National Park Service units, including the Appalachian Trail and the Great Falls, cover more than half the state. Virginia is also known for its historical landmarks, especially for the homes of U.S. presidents such as Thomas Jefferson and George Washington.
